What is the usual way to Karimunjawa?

The usual way to Karimunjawa is: fly into Java (Semarang / SRG is the closest international-style airport for most European guests), travel overland to Jepara, then cross by fast boat from Pelabuhan Kartini. Door to island is a full half-day if connections are kind, a long day if they are not.

What is the Jepara fast ferry?

The Jepara fast ferry is the standard sea crossing to Karimunjawa: a passenger boat from Pelabuhan Kartini (Jepara, Central Java) to the main island, typically around two hours in reasonable weather. A slower vehicle ferry also runs and takes roughly four to five hours. Names you will see include Express Bahari for the fast boat and KMP Siginjai for the slower ferry. Operators and days change. We do not print a weekly grid here because last year’s PDF is how people miss the boat.

Arrive early. Bring your passport. Weekends and Indonesian holidays sell out. If you tell us your dates, we tell you what is running this week — not what a 2023 blog still ranks for.

Can I fly to Karimunjawa?

Yes, on some days. Susi Air flies small propeller planes from Semarang and sometimes Yogyakarta to Dewadaru Airport (KWB) on Karimunjawa. Flight time is about 40–60 minutes. The aircraft are tiny. Baggage is strict — plan around 10 kg including what you carry on, unless the airline tells you otherwise that week.

Flights are not daily. If the weather closes in, the plane stays on the ground. Have a ferry backup. WhatsApp us before you lock a non-refundable fare.

How do I get from Semarang to Karimunjawa?

Most guests land at Ahmad Yani (SRG), take a car or travel bus to Jepara (roughly two hours, traffic willing), then the fast ferry. Direct sea options from Semarang exist on some calendars (PELNI and older “Kartini” write-ups). Treat anything you read about a daily Semarang fast ferry as stale until you have checked the operator the week you travel. The reliable pattern remains: Semarang → Jepara → boat.

From Yogyakarta the overland leg is longer. Still the same last step: Jepara harbour.

How do I get from the harbour to Alam Kita?

Alam Kita is in Desa Alang-Alang, on the west side of the main island, near Sunset Beach. It is not the harbour strip. After a crossing you do not want to hunt for a bemo with a suitcase.

Tickets, passport and the park fee

Karimunjawa is a national park. Foreign guests usually pay a park fee on the Jepara–Karimunjawa route. Keep the receipt. You need your passport to buy ferry tickets. Book a few days ahead for weekends; more ahead for peak Indonesian holidays.

We are not the ticket office. We are the place you sleep after. If a booking site shows a seat, still confirm with the boat company or a harbour desk. Then send us the arrival so the pickup is real.

What if the boat is full or cancelled?

It happens. Weather, mechanical delay, a sold-out Friday. Stay a night in Jepara or Semarang if you must — better that than a rumour timetable. Message us. We reshuffle dinner and the room. Hosted retreats have their own arrival notes; if you are on a programme, say so in the first WhatsApp.

A long travel day, sometimes two. Fly Europe → Jakarta or a Middle-East hub → Semarang (or Yogyakarta). Then Jepara and the boat, or Susi Air if it flies that day. Plan slack. The island does not run on Schiphol time.

Is Karimunjawa the same as Karimun in the Riau Islands?

No. Karimunjawa (Karimun Jawa) is the marine park in the Java Sea, north of Jepara, Central Java. A different Karimun sits near Singapore. Book the wrong one and you will have a very long story.

Do I need to be on a yoga retreat to stay?
